Mask Mouth

Posted by Well Being Dentistry 2023-02-03

The coronavirus pandemic has no doubt changed all of our lives and brought on many new challenges. One challenge that may be flying under the radar involves the impact of mask wearing on our oral health. You may or may not have noticed that while wearing a mask it can make breathing difficult. This often leads to mouth breathing in effort to get a greater volume of oxygen into the body. Breathing through the mouth instead of your nose will lower the amount of protective saliva present causing a dry mouth.

Saliva has many beneficial functions including cleansing and remineralization of the teeth as well as neutralizing the acidic content in your mouth. A dry mouth often leads to an increase in dental decay and oral infections.  Some of us are used to wearing masks at work every day but for many of us this is a new practice to get accustomed to. Here are some pointers to help minimize the effects of “mask mouth.”

*Frequent water breaks!

When it’s safe, take regular breaks to drink water. Most of us are not consuming the appropriate amount of water as it is or replacing it with carbonated or sugary drinks. Stick to water as much as possible.

*Chew sugar free gum!

Chewing gum helps stimulate saliva flow, which will help neutralize the acid in your mouth and counter the effects of a dry mouth.

*Brush and floss before prolonged use!

Most importantly be sure you are brushing and flossing your teeth thoroughly especially if you will be wearing your mask for a long period of time.

This is an unusual and stressful time. Be sure to take care of yourselves and not neglect your oral health. We are here if you have any questions or concerns. Wishing for a healthy and merry holiday season for you and your loved ones.
